Masking
|
|
1. Mask off adjacent panels to prevent overspray.
a. Do not mask in the middle of the panel, this will create a hard tape line.
b. Mask a line with tape first, then tape paper to the existing tape line.
c. If painting in an enclosed area, plastic sheeting over the rest of the car will prevent overspray.
Materials:
- 3/4" tape and 18" masking paper are most commonly used for medium to large size jobs.
- Layered newspaper instead of masking paper can be used if thick enough to prevent bleed through.
- Pre-tape film (Handy Mask) may be more convenient for small to medium size jobs.
- 1 1/2" or 2" tape can be used to mask small areas like door handles or headlights where paper is difficult.

Colored Basecoat Application

1. Throughly shake Aerosol Spray Can before applying.
2. Spray a test panel with Colored Basecoat and Clear before spraying the repair to compare color match.
3. Apply as many medium coats as necessary to completely cover the repair area waiting 5-10 minutes between coats..
a. Each coat should appear uniform and completely dry (dull) before applying the next.
b. Especially with silvers and metallic colors, the color can be lightened by applying lighter or less coats and darkened by applying heavier or more coats. Use a text surface to know which is needed.
c. A Tach Cloth may be used gently over each dry coat to remove any particles.
Three Stage Basecoats:
1. If your Color Code is formulated as a Three Stage Basecoat, the first basecoat (step 1) is applied to fully cover the area and allowed to dry. Then the second basecoat (step 2) is applied as a transparent coat over the first. Stop when the color matches the rest of the vehicle. Clear is then applied as normal.
